Nine-unit residential development, Newton, MA Design Challenge: Develop a residential project that will form the edge of a residential neighborhood to the abutting business neighborhood. Going through the special permit process, develop a project that would strike a balance between maximizing number of units and bridging the scale between the two different neighborhoods. Solution: After getting special permit approval for a mixed-unit project, went back and worked with the neighborhood for input on conversion of the project into an all residential development. The board of alderman again approved the project. The 12,000+ sf, three-story building has 9 residential units: 7 flats and 2 duplexes, all in the 1,100 - 1,300 sf range.
