Private residence, Newton, MA Design Challenge: Design a house in context with a neighborhood of homes from the 50’s & 60’s and panache appropriate for the south side of Newton. Solution: Modestly sized home (3500s.f.), with a superb open plan and contemporary flair, has a strong inside/outside relationship to a private yard, large state of the art kitchen, private master suite, an au pair suite over the garage and a full service upper level laundry. The rooms are amply sized yet sculpted to an intimate quality. On the exterior, strong horizontal lines, contemporary window groupings, large roof overhangs, and the use of wide board siding help this house fit seamlessly to its’ neighborhood, echoing all the positive elements of that era.
